Do it yourself
26 things you can do without changing a light bulb
Everybody's doing it -- coming up with lists of ways to reduce your carbon footprint. But many of these, we've noticed, include things you've already heard umpteen times (switch to compact fluorescent bulbs) as well as things that probably won't make much difference (unplug your coffee maker when it's not in use). Here's our list of suggestions, minus the most obvious and onerous. Do the green thing
Here are some groups you can join
Amanda White says Community Car helps people save money while serving a lofty ideal: "The staff feels it's a way to address this mounting global crisis we're facing." How green is my government?
City, county are often pioneers in smart new approaches
Mike DiMaggio dons a pair of protective earphones before leading the way into a small building at Dane County's Rodefeld landfill, on Highway 12/18. Inside, four huge generators rumble noisily as each one burns methane gas, converting it into electricity. A network of pipes brings in the gas, which is sucked from the landfill by small wells scattered among the decomposing garbage. 'A green and blaze orange issue'
Wisconsin hunters and anglers join fight against global warming
This January, in Monona Bay, the Yahara Fishing Club did something it hadn't been able to do for several years: Hold an ice fishing event for kids. The groups schedules the event every winter, but the scarcity of ice cover on Madison-area lakes has made the event hit or miss. Mostly miss.
